Last Thursday the Art department took Year 11 Art students to Victoria & Albert Museum to research their GCSE exam paper theme ‘Events’. The V&A is the home of art, craft, design and performance. From Bauhaus to Bowie, Mackintosh to McQueen the students collected a wealth of inspiration to use back at school.

We then headed on to the Natural History Museum to explore the journey from dinosaurs to human evolution, paying particular attention to their exhibition on our current climate and planetary emergency, discussing the rate that the natural world is disappearing and the effects that are already being felt.

For their art exam students need to show how they have developed ideas, refined their work, recorded their processes and created a personal and meaningful response. The museum visits helped students to broaden their choices and rather than focusing on typical events like weddings and birthdays our students are now considering events such as natural disasters, the effects of war, tidal patterns, climate change, and technological advancements.

Tasfeer in Year 11 said that “after the visits I decided on natural phenomena’s as my area of study. I took so many photos in both galleries linked to the natural worlds and am enjoying researching this area”.

Tolu in Year 11 said “I am considering using sitting exams as my theme, as I can connect first hand with the stress and anxiety surrounding this topic, I hope to convey some of this information through my painting and show how this one event can change the course of our futures”.
