Shakespeare Schools Festival

On Tuesday 12th November at 19:30, students from Chobham Academy will be performing in William Shakespeare’s comedy, “Much Ado About Nothing”, at the Stratford Circus as part of the annual Shakespeare School’s Festival.

Students have been rehearsing the comedy since September as part of their drama enrichment. Whilst this has been a quick turnaround, students have worked tirelessly to bring together the comedic and romantic aspects of the play together.

Much Ado About Nothing focuses on two romances – upon returning from war, Claudio (Xhanti Mbonzongwanain - Year 10) falls in love with Hero (Dennie Harriot - Year 9). But after being tricked into believing that she has been unfaithful to him, Claudio shames Hero at their wedding ceremony.

Running alongside this is the comedic tale of Beatrice (Olivia Richardson-Bunbury, Year 9) and Benedick (Jamie Grant, Year 9). Initially, the pair are mortal enemies, trading insults at one another whenever possible. But their friends devise a plot that eventually leads to them realising that they are, in fact, deeply in love with one another, with hilarious consequences!

cid:16e375c9df13853c48e1Under the directorial guidance of Mr. Faulkner, students are getting excited at the prospect of performing at a professional theatre. Whilst the play was written in 1598 and set in Messina, Italy, but using modern attitudes and music, our concept will bring the play forward to 2019, and it will be set in East London.

“It’s been great fun being able to bring a Shakespeare play to life” said Jamie Grant, playing Benedick, “and the opportunity to perform at a local theatre is so exciting!”
